The Space Between Group exhibition

Group exhibition curated by myself. Held on the 24th Jan 2025 At GabbaXchange, Woolloongabba.

The Space Between was a two-level, multi-disciplinary group exhibition that I curated over the course of four months, bringing together more than 30 artists across a wide spectrum of 1practices. The event showcased a diverse array of work including visual art, sculptural installations, film displays, interactive games, handmade goods, and live performances.

With a strong emphasis on whimsy and playfulness, the exhibition aimed to create an ethereal, dreamlike environment that invited attendees to explore, interact, and immerse themselves in a world of imaginative expression. Every detail — including a whimsical dress code — was designed to evoke a sense of wonder and otherworldliness.

The space was structured in sections, including:

  • A market-style area featuring prints, jewellery and other small items for sale

  • A collaborative art-making station

  • Film and digital media displays

  • A stage and seating area for scheduled performances

  • Sculptural and visual artworks exhibited across walls and plinths

Throughout the evening, visitors were encouraged to move freely between, engaging with installations and connecting directly with artists. Performances included live music, dance, interactive performance art, and a DJ set.

For my own contribution, I created an immersive installation composed of three large freestanding textural works (1–2 metres in height), three tree-like structures (1-2m high), and tissue-paper “rocks” internally lit to glow from within. These elements were arranged around a central collaborative making table and nestled seating, forming a cozy  space. Strategic lighting — including fairy lights, coloured glows, and spotlighting — was used to draw attention to textures and shimmers in the artwork.

The collaborative element invited guests to sculpt their own creatures using foam clay and decorative materials, then place them into a hand-built landscape as part of the installation. This area remained active throughout the night, with a continuous flow of attendees creating, contributing, and sharing the space together.

Highlighted works from other artists included:

  • Interactive performance using the body and stickers by Angelofnacre

  • 2m textile installation with body motifs by Gretel Chapman

  • Interactive jellyfish costume by RO$ALYN R!OT, Costume by Ruby Ford

  • Suspended soft-body sculpture By Bowie D

  • Delicate stop-motion film installation by Matilda Heck

  • Playful fortune-telling game by Quillan Dunne (design), Christal (art)

  • Live performance with vocals, piano and dance by Clair Wheatley

  • Dollhouse sculpture surrounded by florals and moss by Jorja Rotar

  • Large-scale flip phone sculpture  by Milan

The Space Between was designed to offer not only an art experience but a space of connection, interaction, and imaginative escape — a temporary world built collaboratively by both artists and visitors.
